Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
About Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
A skin cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but knowing that effective, minimally invasive treatment options are available can make a meaningful difference. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one such option — a targeted treatment for individuals with precancerous skin lesions or certain non-melanoma skin cancers.
At Dallas Associated Dermatologists, our providers are here to support you every step of the way, from diagnosis through treatment and aftercare.
What is Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a combination of a topical solution and light therapy to eliminate cancerous and precancerous cells. First, a topical solution is applied to the affected area, where it is absorbed by the targeted cells. The area is then exposed to a specific wavelength of light, which activates the solution and uses an active form of oxygen to destroy the abnormal cells while leaving surrounding healthy tissue largely unaffected.
PDT is commonly used to treat:
- Precancerous skin lesions such as actinic keratoses
- Non-melanoma skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma
What to Expect
Because PDT precisely targets abnormal cells, it allows for a quicker recovery and little to no scarring after healing. Since the treatment is less invasive than many other skin cancer treatments, most patients are able to return to their normal activities soon after the procedure is completed.
Your dermatologist at Dallas Associated Dermatologists will walk you through the full process and let you know what to expect before, during, and after your treatment.
